About 3iBS

Background & objectives

Background

Bus systems transport 30 billion people per year in the EU, compared to only 800 million passengers travelling by air!

The bus still remains the most universal solution for a balanced and sustainable urban development effectively taking into account the economic, environmental and social perspectives. It is a very efficient mode of transport: cheap, flexible, and tailored to the needs of end-customers, both in terms of capacity and speed. Buses do not require heavy infrastructure and are easy to be put in service.

Buses are already amongst the most environmentally and energy efficient passenger transport modes with low levels of local emissions, low CO₂ and other GHG emissions, low energy consumption, low space consumption and excellent accident records. Considering the growing congestion and environmental problems of the cities, it is therefore vital to improve the attractiveness of the bus systems, to anchor and spread the system-approach including emotional aspects for all types of stakeholders.

Objectives

  • Stimulate coordinated research on urban Bus Systems
  • Develop an exploitation platform & strategies for innovations supporting bus stakeholders
  • Promote exchanges of knowledge between worldwide experts
  • Disseminate about and capitalise on results and solutions of successful Bus Systems’ projects
